Overview
The Samsung Galaxy Watch 6 is a feature-packed smartwatch that offers a range of health and fitness tracking capabilities. It has over a hundred activities to monitor and more customization options, as well as untethered GPS connection and personalized heart rate zones.
Music and Fitness
The Galaxy Watch 6 has expanded the number of workouts that can be tracked, with over a hundred activities to monitor and more customization options. It is also casting a wider net for users looking to track niche sports, such as skiing, beach volleyball, bowling and cricket.
Heart Rate Zones
For avid runners, the Watch 6 offers the added perk of personalized heart rate zones. When a user runs for at least 10 minutes, the watch automatically detects their heart rate zones. However, users can also set up custom brackets to stay within a targeted range based on their aerobic capabilities and hit a fat burning zone.
Testing the Heart Rate Zones
When put to the test, the heart rate zones of the Watch 6 proved to be accurate and easy to monitor. Initiating a run requires a single tap on the settings icon, which enables the user to pick their desired zone. The pop-up graphic gives a clear snapshot of how the activity is matching up with the heart rate goals. Mid-run, users can tailor their custom range to mirror the standard anaerobic zone, which is about 155 to 173 beats per minute. This helps to build endurance and maximize the amount of oxygen the body can convert for energy.
Heart Rate Zones
The Samsung Galaxy Watch 6 offers users the ability to create custom heart rate zone brackets. This feature is designed to help users better understand their heart rate during exercise and adjust their intensity accordingly. After setting up my custom heart rate zone brackets, I was able to track my heart rate during a workout and see how it compared to my target zone.
I was pleasantly surprised to find that the watch was able to accurately track my heart rate during my workout. However, I found that the watch was not as effective at helping me stay within my target zone. I was constantly buzzed and notified when the zone I was in was below my target, so I had to keep adjusting my goal for that bracket that was more easily achievable in low intensity workouts. But when I did that I found that I was constantly above my target, so the watch did a good job of coaching me on when to push harder and when to let up. But I was only able to stay in my targeted zones for short periods.
So while I see the value in being able to create custom heart rate zone brackets, this tool might not be super useful for a general user that’s not into super competitive sports or even just running for that matter.
Period Tracking
The Samsung Galaxy Watch 6 also offers a menstrual cycle tracking feature powered by the Natural Cycles period tracking app. After setting up my profile, I was able to track my menstrual cycle and receive predictions for upcoming periods. However, my menstrual cycle is irregular, so the predictions for my period week were basically useless.
Despite my disappointment that my cycle predictions were off more than anything, I was impressed with the interface on the actual watch. It was user friendly and easy to navigate. Additionally, back in April, Samsung added a skin temperature measurement capability within its sensor technology, which makes a calendar based cycle tracking feature smarter. This is important because body temperature fluctuates throughout the menstrual cycle, so any cycle tracking app that takes that data into account is going to be more accurate.
Overall, the Samsung Galaxy Watch 6 offers a variety of health and fitness tracking features that are useful for users with regular menstrual cycles. However, the watch’s ability to accurately track heart rate and provide useful cycle predictions may be limited for users with irregular cycles.

Menstrual Cycle Tracking
The Samsung Galaxy Watch 6 has a menstrual cycle tracker that allows users to enter symptoms such as bloating and fatigue. It also provides a snapshot of the cycle predictions and expected dates for the user’s period. This feature can be useful for those who want to keep track of their menstrual cycle.
Heart Rate Monitoring
The watch also has a heart rate monitor and can detect irregular heart rhythms. It has received FDA clearance for this tool and can detect atrial fibrillation, a condition that can lead to stroke or heart failure. When the watch notices irregular heart activity, it will alert the user to seek medical attention. The watch also allows users to measure ECG and heart rate readings and share the results with their doctor or loved ones.
The watch never detected it, so I dont know if it works or not.
Accurate Readings
The Samsung Galaxy Watch 6 offers accurate readings when it comes to health and fitness tracking. Its ECG feature is particularly impressive, providing users with a reliable representation of their heart rate. The watch is also capable of detecting sinus rhythm, which is indicative of a normal reading.
Heart Rate Alerts
The Galaxy Watch 6 allows users to set up alerts for high and low heart rates. This could be useful for those who want to track how a specific medication is affecting them at rest. Once a benchmark for a high heart rate is created, notifications can be sent to a paired device.
Fall Detection
The watch also features a fall detection feature, which can be manually activated. Users can choose when to detect falls, whether it be during workouts or any other activity. The updated SOS feature is designed to share the user’s location with emergency services and call 9-1-1. This could be beneficial for those with disabilities or older people.
Testing Results
When testing the fall detection feature, the watch failed to detect any falls. It is unclear whether or not the feature works as intended, as it did not detect any falls during the testing period.
Fall Detection
The Samsung Galaxy Watch 6 features a fall detection system, which is designed to trigger an SOS alert if the user experiences a fall. However, during my testing, the system failed to detect my falls. When I inquired about this, I was told that the parameters for fall detection are what matters for the alert system to be triggered. On the other hand, when I tested the Apple Watch’s fall detection feature, it too failed to detect my falls.
Sleep Comfort
I was pleasantly surprised to find that I was able to sleep comfortably with the Samsung Galaxy Watch 6 on my wrist. This is a major breakthrough for me, as I have previously tried sleeping with an Apple Watch on, but have always ended up taking it off. The Galaxy Watch 6’s sleek and soft wristband made it so that I could keep it on all night without feeling any discomfort. Additionally, the sleep mode automatically disables notifications and dims the screen, which is great for light sleepers like me.
Sleep Tracking
The Galaxy Watch 6 also offers sleep tracking capabilities. After sleeping with the watch for at least seven days, the data is crunched and analyzed by Samsung Health, which then provides a personalized report on the amount of REM sleep one got and why it is important for memory and learning. I found it convenient to view my sleep score on the watch face and get a condensed version of my report every morning. Furthermore, the upgraded software also hosts a sleep coach, which provides a personalized analysis of one’s sleep.
